Calcutta Gymkhana Tennis Club transitions to food distribution during Covid-19 pandemic!!!



Sohag Bhattacharjee, Kolkata,May 15: Calcutta Gymkhana Tennis Club is a well renowned Club of Kolkata located at Suhrawardy Ave, Beniapukur. The club not only gives training for tennis but also are engaged with various social reform activities. They also provide free trainings to under privilege people. During this pandemic of Covid-19 outbreak they have been taking an initiative to feed poor and needy people of thier locality.





Calcutta Gymkhana Tennis Club has started thier initiative of serving poor people during lockdown with the help of Md.Dawood. Dawood has been serving as thier head cook in this initiative.Dawood who before the Covid-19 outbreak used to make biriyani, kebabs, firni and other mughal delicacies as their family business. After the pandemic started Dawood and his friends Seku and Raju thought of serving the poor. So they have started making Kichdi and Sabzi for hundreds of homeless,ragpickers,families with aged and disabled  living in Park Circus area.

mentioned that the team of Kolkata Police has been helping them immensely. Kolkata Police is with them all through and supporting  from all aspects. Javed Shamim,Special Commissioner of Police of 
Kolkata, D P Singh, Addl Commissioner of Police, Praveen Tripathi,DIG PR,Rupesh Kumar,DCP Kolkata Traffic also have became a part of the initiative. Cops from local Police Stations, including Beniapukur, Bhowanipur and Beliaghata and East Traffic Guard are regularly collecting more or less 500 food packets and distributing to the weaker section of society around in Parkcircus areas. 



Pramode Agarwal, treasurer of the club told that the club started distributing food packets from April 2 and till date more than 20000 to 22000 food packets have already been distributed. 
The club started with a simple menu of kichdi, rice and sabzi or pulao. Members of the club were happy that they could serve people in crisis period.




DCP Kolkata Traffic IPS Rupesh Kumar said
to serve underprivileged residents of Parkcircus, Harizan Basti, Bhcawanipore and other areas the Club has extended their hands since the initial stage of lockdown.Really doing well in this corona crisis moment in Kolkata.




Initially the funding was made by the members of the club. Besides this food distribution,recently they have contributed 1 lac to  CM Relief Fund to fight against Covid 19.. 



On May 14 they distributed hygiene kits containing rice,dal,oil,spices and necessary hygiene materials along with Horlicks, Juice, Chocolate, vooked meal among 125 needy persons of Park Circus and its surrounding areas and club has decided to continue this initiative till the lockdown ends. The initiative is praiseworthy and the support of Kolkata Police is commendable.
