Sapling Plantation Drive under Motto 'Go Green' by Kolkata Police



Sohag Bhattacharjee, August 13, Kolkata : Kolkata Police including the Traffic Guard took an eco friendly initiative of sapling plantation drive under the motto of 'Go Green'. This initiative was conducted to restore the loss of trees due to the devastating cyclone 'Amphan'. The planting drive was launched across the city on the occassion of World Environment Day, June 06. Police commissioner Anuj Sharma attended the main programme at the Police Athletic Club tent on June 06 morning and planted a couple of trees.



Every police station planned the plantations with the involvement of the locals. According to a police officer they have discussed the drive with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. 

They asked to plant only deep rooted plants so that they can resist natural calamities well. More than 15000 trees were uprooted across the city due to 'Amphan'. Several saplings of neem, mahogany and arjun trees were transported from the Goaltore and other nurseries in Midnapore for the plantation drive. 


At New Alipore police station where 99 trees got uprooted during 'Amphan'. Approximately 300 trees are being planted in a phased manner. One of the officer of New Alipore police station told that they have created a What's App group with environment enthusiasts to ensure that these plants must get watered till the former rainy season strucks West Bengal. 


The cops of Entally Police Station after the completion of first round of sapling plantation took an oath to take care of the plants. The cops also said they are planning to plant at least 100 strong rooted trees in next one week. 10 mahogany trees were planted afterwards. The soil was provided by the Metro authorities.At Hastings, special care was taken to ensure that the trees which were planted at the police station and elsewhere were fenced to ensure they were not destroyed by stray animals or humans. 



 In southeast and central Kolkata, cops planted trees on the boulevards. The cops claimed that thier idea was to be sure that a new tree gets planted where the old one got uprooted. Hence at Sarsuna where multiple trees were uprooted cops planted new trees around the water bodies and other areas.



Saplings plantation drive was conducted at different places under Vidyasager Setu Traffic Guard.Inspector S M Monirul Islam, Officer in Charge Vidyasager Setu Traffic Guard, Inspector Saibal Paul, Additional Ofiicer in Charge Vidyasager Setu Traffic Guard, Sergeant Priyanjan Mazumder and others took the initiative. They planted many plants inside the police station and also in many near by areas where trees got uprooted due to 'Amphan'. Police cops which the help of the local residents planted the plants. They also ensured that they will take care of these plants.
